Why A Used Car May be the Better Choice

Have A Junk Car? What You Need To Do

When you have a vehicle that has broken down to the point that you no longer want to fix it up, you have a junk car on your hands. Getting rid of a junk car is a little different than dealing with a used car.

Make Sure You Have the Title

Even when you are getting rid of a junk car, you still need to make sure that you have the title in hand. The junk yard or salvage yard that you sell the car to is going to need the vehicle's title and registration. That means that you need to have these documents in your possession or secure those documents before getting rid of the vehicle. If the scrap yard junks the vehicle, they will let the DMV or SOS know that they have taken this action and that the car is no longer on the road.

Have a Bill of Sale

When working with a junk yard, they will probably provide you with a vehicle bill of sale. However, you can also supply your own bill of sale as well. Make sure that the bill of sale specifically states that the vehicle is being sold as-is as well as the condition of the vehicle. If the vehicle has a salvaged title, you need to make that known as well on the bill of sale. The bill of sale should include the contact information of both parties.

Make sure that you walk away with a physical copy of the bill of sale. You can bring two copies of the bill of sale, and have everyone sign both copies if you will not have access to a copy machine during the transaction.

Find Out How to Prepare the Vehicle

Call up the scrap yard and figure out what you need to do to prepare the vehicle. Some scrap yards will want you to bring the vehicle in as it is.

Other scrap yards will prefer that you get rid of all non-metal material from the vehicle. For example, they may want you to take the tires off the vehicle or remove any stereos systems or extra equipment in the vehicle.

Remember to Shop Around

Finally, remember to shop around. If you have more than one junk yard or scrap yard in your area, call to see you what each place will offer you for the vehicle. Some places will buy cars for cash. You may get a different price from different places based on the needs of their inventory and the demand that they have for particular vehicles.
